Eye surgeons are artists, craftsman, and in some instances akin to professional athletes. It is often true that we forget this or don’t think of ourselves that way. In the worst circumstances, we think of ourselves as employees-punching in a timeclock to go to work and then punching out when the job is done. Which, there’s nothing wrong with being an employee (I’m employed by the University of Utah and even the VA) but I think there is something wrong with physicians, (who should be at the very top of their game when taking care of other people’s lives) thinking about their life’s work in that way. Even more so for eye surgery, where less than 1/100 of a millimeter error can make the difference between 20/20 vision and 20/100 vision-a huge impact on a patient’s life.

Today was a clinic day. I did clinic all day long. I did clinic in one location in the morning and then drive about 40 minutes to another location at the University. I like the drive. Its forces me to stop and take a break. I listen to NPR. I listened to a number of experts discussing the current financial plight of the country. One was a discussing the larger geopolitical viewpoint and where things could go. The other discussed things from a more individual level. She started everything by sharing how her children had just bought their own houses and did it the right way. But she was very relatable and had that voice that just made you want to listen to her. I liked her. I liked her a lot. And everything she talked about was logical, reasonable, and relatable. For example, she deals with people who get into financial trouble. While the other expert talked about how we were 6-8 years due for a huge market correction, this one talked about how she dealt with people with felt like they were getting “free money” by being in credit card debt. It was very understandable on a human level.
You can be incredibly smart, but if you’re not relatable, you probably won’t be as impactful. I found this on “Cup of Jo” blog (and it’s imperfectly quoted because I’m going off of memory, which I think is more important than accuracy because most of our life is spent going off of memory rather than looking up the exactness of things)-Causing 10 people to eat no meat is less impactful than causing 100 people to eat less meat.
